DMARC FAQs
What is DMARC?
DMARC (or Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance) is a security protocol which can be enabled on your company domain to help reduce the risks associated with unauthorised usage of your domain (spoofing). This is where an attacker impersonates a known business with a fake
domain to fool people into trusting them.
DMARC determines whether an email is authentic or not. Suspicious emails will then either be put into quarantine, or rejected completely, depending on the policies set.
Why is DMARC important?
DMARC helps establish trust.
Domains (e.g. @wicresoftinternational.com), with DMARC enabled are regarded as domains with a higher level of trust than those without DMARC enabled. The impact of this is that as more companies enable DMARC, those that haven’t enabled it will find that more of the emails they send may not be successfully delivered to the intended recipients. This means that messages you consider important could end up going into the recipient’s spam, clutter, or worse still, being rejected altogether.
How quickly could I address this issue?
Wicresoft have put together a service to enable DMARC on your primary domain. This starts at a modest fee and can be implemented in less than 10 working days, on the basis you are able to provide us with the appropriate information to enable us to carry out the work for you.
Will the implementation of DMARC affect our staff?
Impact on staff will be minimal.
As we go through the DMARC enablement process, there will be a stage when you will be asked if you would like to quarantine emails sent to you that don’t comply with DMARC checks. These emails may still be delivered but will almost certainly end up in your spam inbox. Some of these emails may be from people you wish to do business with and would need to be whitelisted, so as not to be classed as spam
in future. Part of the service we offer will provide up to 1 hour of consultation on how to deal with this outcome as part of the DMARC enablement process.
What other protection does DMARC offer?
- Helps protect your company brand and image – Reduces the risk of unauthorised usage of your company domain (spoofing).
- Reduces spam – DMARC helps reduce the amount of unsolicited/untrusted emails landing directly in your employees’ inboxes.
- Helps protect against cyber attack – By quarantining or rejecting suspicious emails, employees are less likely to open malicious emails and click on malicious links.
- Increases trust between DMARC enabled domains. If your email is trusted within your network of contacts, your emails are more likely to reach the intended recipients.
- Increasingly stipulated in modern cyber insurance policies – More and more insurance companies are now specifying that DMARC should be in place when organisations apply for cyber insurance.
How will DMARC help the people I want to do business with?
Whilst DMARC cannot prevent someone from spoofing your domain, any spoofed domains will not include the same DMARC checks that we will enable on your legitimate domain.
This means that if the people you do business with also have DMARC enabled, any emails which appear to come from you, but are actually from a spoofed domain, are likely to be rejected and the intended recipient will be protected from cyber attack.
If I pay for the service will it stop me from needing any other cyber security services?
Without knowing every company’s unique position regarding cyber-security, we cannot guarantee that you won’t need any additional cyber security services. We would welcome the opportunity to speak to you directly about your current level of cyber security maturity, and what may be needed in future, and then advise on any appropriate additional services you may wish to consider to help your business become more cyber secure.
